81. Death Valley National Park /Narodowy Park Death Valley (Dolina Śmierci)

Keith got confused and slightly shocked by the amount of salt present in Badwater Basin (the lowest point in North America at 282 ft below sea level). Or maybe temperaure was way too high for him (102F). / Keith troszkę się zdziwił widokiem takiej ilości soli w Badwater Basin (w najniżej położonym punkcie Ameyki Północnej 86 m.p.p.m.). Chociaż być może po prostu było mu za gorąco  (39C).

After leaving Los Angeles we headed down towards Las Vegas and decided to break the journey again.
This time we turned our eyes towards Death Valley National Park.  As we drove, we literally saw nothing but mountains in the distance and rocky dessert around us. Not a single house, just empty road with no cars and no lights of any kind.
Once we got to the Death Valley, we quickly realised that we've made a mistake. We had the wrong car! Instead of renting a passenger car we should have got ourselves a 4x4 that could handle rough territory.
 Roads in the valley are generally well paved but if you want to see more interesting stuff, well, you need a 4x4. So we missed intriguing 'Racetrack' - a place where stones are mysteriously moving leaving tracks. Walking there wasn't an option, the place is 11 miles off the road and temperatures were reaching 100F.
But we got to see some pretty amazing places anyway. The dark skies of the valley with the Milky Way seen by our naked eyes  made up for any unseen sights - it was that breathtaking.
Thanks to reduced lightning inside and outside the park, our naked eye can see many wonders in the dark sky of the Death Valley. On moonless nights planets like Jupiter and Venus dominate the view. You can also see star clusters like Pleiades, distant Andromeda Galaxy (2.5 milion lights away) and the Milky Way.


Po opuszczeniu Los Angeles skierowaliśmy się w stronę Las Vegas, znowu dzieląc podróż na etapy.  / S
Gdy już dotarliśmy na miejsce, szybko się zorientowaliśmy, że popełniliśmy wielki błąd. Wynajęliśmy auto nie takie, jakie potrzebne jest na warunki panujące tutaj. Powinniśmy byli wynająć auto terenowe 4x4, a nie tam jakiś samochodzik miejski.
Drogi w dolinie są generalnie wyłożone asfaltem, ale jeżeli chce się zobaczyć coś ciekawszego, to trzeba zboczyć z utartego szlaku. I w ten właśnie sposób ominęła nas możliwość zobaczenia tzw. 'Racetrack' - czyli miejsca, gdzie kamienie w tajemniczy sposób  poruszają się, zostawiając ślady. Spacer do tego miejsca w ogóle nie wchodził w rachubę, gdyż oddalone ono było o ponad 17 km od drogi asfaltowej, no i temperatura dochodziła do 39C. Na szczęście i tak udało nam się zobaczyć niesamowite miejsca. Ciemne, nocne niebo doliny, na którym widać było Mleczną Drogę gołym okiem wynagrodziło nam nasze rozczarowanie - widok dosłownie zapierał dech w piersiach.
Dzięki ograniczonemu oświetleniu w parku i poza nim, gołym okiem można zobaczyć różne cuda na ciemnym niebie Doliny Śmierci. Podczas bezksiężycowych nocy planety takie jak Jupiter czy Venus dominują niebo. Można również zobaczyć takie gromady gwiazd jak Pleiades, odległą Galaktykę Andromedę (oddaloną o 2.5 miliona lat świetlnych) oraz Mleczną Drogę.

Nobody around... the silence was overpowering. / Ani jednej żywej duszy...ta cisza może być przytłaczająca. 

Dante's View provides spectacural views on the valley. / Ze szczytu Dante's View rozpościera się spektakularny widok na dolinę.

Mesquitte Flat Sand Dunes - you feel firsty just by looking at them. / Wydmy Mesquitte Flat Sand Dunes - wystarczy rzucić na nie okiem i człowiek od razu czuje się spragniony. 

Artist's Pallette, incredible colourful rocks painted by Mother Nature. / Paleta Artysty, niesamowicie kolorowe skały pomalowane przez Matkę Naturę.

We will never forget that view! Milky Way very clearly arching right above us - we have never experienced anything like that before. / Nigdy w życiu nie zapomnimy tego widoku! Mleczna Droga bardzo wyraźnie rozpościerająca się nad nami w kształcie łuku - nigdy w życiu czegoś takiego jeszcze nie doświadczyliśmy.
