Elephant Nature Park outside Chiang Mai (northern Thailand) is the first sanctuary ever opened of its kind in Thailand. It has been opened few years ago and is a home and rehabilitation centre for elephants. At the time of our visit there were 45 elephants living here.
Elephants arriving in sanctuary are rescued ( read, REPURCHASED) from their owners in tourism industry. Abused elephants are being forced to spend days on hot and polluted city streets begging for money and commonly used for elephants rides and trekking trips.
They usually arrive in sanctuary scared and confused with mental issues and visible physical abuse. Lek Chailert is the first person to spend time with those animals trying to gain their trust and show them they will no longer suffer. She is so devoted that she even spent a month sleeping in the shed with one of the elephants just to show her she means no harm. The process of rehabilitation is very long but elephants face brighter future in this sanctuary.
Many people visitting the park can spend a day or longer here. For those wishing to help more, volunteering programmes ( one week or longer) are in place.
Elephant Nature Park niedaleko miasta Chiang Mai (w północnej Tajlandii) jest pierwszym tego typu sanktuarium założonym w Tajlandii. Park otwarty został kilka lat temu i służy jako dom i centrum rehabilitacyjne dla słoni. W momencie naszej wizyty w parku tym znajdowało sie 45 słoni.
Słonie przybywające do sanktuarium są uratowane (czytaj WYKUPIONE) z rąk właścicieli powiązanych z przemysłem turystycznym. Wykorzystywane są one do wożenia ludzi na grzebietach oraz zmuszane do spędzania całych dni na 'wyłudzaniu' pieniędzy od turystów w miastach, gdzie gorący asfalt oraz drżenia wyczuwalne na skutek ruchu ulicznego sprawiają im wiele cierpienia.
Do sanktuarium przybywają zmieszane, przestraszone i często z urazami psychicznymi oraz oznakami przemocy fizycznej. Wspomniana wyżej Lek Chailert jest pierwszą osobą, która spędza czas ze zwierzętami próbując zdobyć ich zaufanie i pokazać, iż tutaj nie zaznają już żadnej krzywdy. Jest tej sprawie oddana do tego stopnia, że zdażyło się jej nawet spędzić cały miesiąc na spaniu w szopie wraz ze słonicą po to tylko, by zdobyć jej zaufanie. Proces rehabilitacji jest bardzo długi, ale na szczęście słonie w sanktuarium mogą żyć spokojnie.
Ludzie odwiedzający park mogą spędzić tutaj dzień lub dłużej. Ci, którzy chcą nieść więcej pomocy mogą zgłosić się do programów wolontariuszy trwających tydzień lub dłużej.

| There are less than 4000 elephants left in Thailand, most of them live in captivity. They face a threat of extinction through human population growth. They have nowhere left to roam freely because human are taking all of the land. / W Tajlandii obecnie żyje mniej niż 4000 słoni, większość z nich w niewoli. Tym na wolności grozi wyginięcie za sprawą wzrastającej liczby ludności. Słonie nie mają najzwyczajniej gdzie się podziać, gdyż wszędzie ziemie zajmuje człowiek. |

| Elephants are being fed from the viewing platform in the park. Most of the time they spend eating and walking around the park (where they keep on eating) with mahouts by their side. / Słonie w parku karmi się z platformy obserwacyjnej. Większość czasu spędzają one zresztą na jedzeniu i spacerowaniu po parku (i dalszym konsumowaniu jedzenia) ze swoimi poganiaczami u boku. |

| Ironically, neighbouring land with sanctuary is owned by people who own and use elephants for tourism industry (elephants rides and trekking). So you get the contrast of seeing animals roaming freely and people sitting on the back of elephants across the river. / Jak na ironię, sąsiadującą ziemię z parkiem posiadają na własność ludzie, którzy używają słoni w celach turystycznych (przejażdżki oraz wycieczki na słoniach). Zadziwia trochę widok słoni spacerujących sobie bezstresowo po jednej stronie ze słońmi noszącymi turystów na grzbietach po drugiej stronie rzeki. |
