San Francisco is lively. It has got this great vibe and dynamic energy to it. It might be down to the location we stayed in. And we stayed slap right in the middle of downtown. Bars, restaurants, hotels, shops and... many homeless people.
Yes, unfortunately there is no denying that San Francisco is full of them. We've seen homeless in Seattle, few shelters but not on a such high scale as here in San Francisco! That was a big shock, even more so when we looked around and saw job advertisements in shop windows! But there must be some good reason to this, a deeper problem or sudden change?! Rapidly progressing newly founded IT boom? We have attached an articacle that perhaps explains the nature of the issue.
San Francisco tętni życiem. Ma fajne wibracje i dynamiczną energię. Być może ma to związek z miejscem, w którym się zatrzymaliśmy. Czyli w samym sercu, centrum miasta pełnym barów, restauracji, hoteli, sklepów i... bezdomnych ludzi.
Tak, niestety nie można zaprzeczyć, że San Francisco zapełnione jest bezdomnymi. Już w Seattle widać było dużą liczbę ludzi śpiących na ulicy, kilka schronisk dla bezdomnych, ale nie na taką skalę jak tutaj w San Francisco. Było to szokującym zaskoczeniem, zwłaszcza, że wystawy sklepowe wypełnione były ogłoszeniami o pracę. Musi być jakieś sensowne wytłumaczenie tego zjawiska, może jakiś bardziej skomplikowany problem lub nagła zmiana?! A może ma to coś wspólnego z nowym boom'em w dziedzinie IT?

| Alcatraz Island, the famous federal prison that housed Al Capone and some other highly feared prisoners. What is possibly a much less known fact from its history, is that, after the prison closed, Alcatraz was selected (3 times in total) as a place to make a stand by a group of Native American political activists. During its final occupation, a small group that landed on the island claimed it in the name of the 'Indians of All Tribes'. They offered to buy Alcatraz from the government for $24 in beads, color cloth, and other trade goods. The island reminded them of an Indian reservation. / Wyspa Alcatraz, słynne więzienie, w którym zamieszkał Al Capone i inni wzbudzający strach więźniowie. Być może mniej znanym faktem z historii Alcatraz jest to, że po zlikwidowaniu więzienia wyspę tą zajęli Indiańscy aktywiści polityczni (w sumie 3 razy). W okresie ostatniej okupacji wyspy aktywiści przejęli ją w imię 'Indian Wszystkich Plemion'. Zaproponowali oni, że wykupią Alcatraz od rządu za równowartość $24 którą wypłacą w koralikach, kolorowych tkaninach i innych towarach handlowych. Wyspa ta przypominała im indiański rezerwat. |

Apparently this bridge is very popular with people with suicidal tendencies: the waters are very cold & have got extremely strong currents. / Słynący z zakrycia mgłą (no akurat nie dzisiaj) Most Golden Gate. Wyjście na Pacyfik. Podobno most ten popularny jest pośród samobójców: woda tu jest lodowata no i prądy bardzo silne. |

Very exciting but long time waiting to board one. / Będący ikoną San Francisco tramwaj Cable Car bez problemu przewiezie każdego w górę i dół tymi górzystymi niemalże drogami. Minus jest taki, że na taką ekscytującą przejażdżkę trzeba długo czekać w kolejce. |

| Victorian houses on the hill of Alamo Square are another symbol of San Francisco. Looking down the hill you can't help but thinking that, if pushed, these houses could fall one after another in a domino effect. Guess that's what the earthquake of 1906 might have looked like. / Wiktoriańskie domy na wzgórzach Placu Alamo są kolejnym symbolem San Francisco. Spoglądając w dół wzgórza przychodzi do głowy myśl, że jakby móc pchnąć jeden dom, to pewnie poleciałyby wszystkie, jeden po drugim jak w efekcie domino. Można by było tak sobie wyobrazić trzęsienie ziemi, które miało tu miejsce w 1906r. |

| The most peculiar meetings of all: bumping into Harvey on the street! We were meant to meet up with him at some point here in San Francisco but nothing was set in stone. Funny thing is that we actually were discussing that when suddenly Harvey just appeared in front of us. Well, that deserves a drink or two... / Najbardziej osobliwe spotkanie ze wszystkich: wpadnięcie na Harvey'go na ulicy! Wiedzieliśmy, że przyjeżdża i mieliśmy się spotkać, ale nic nie było ustalone. Zabawne jest to, że akurat o nim rozmawialiśmy, kiedy on się przed nami dosłownie zmaterializował. No cóż, takie spotkanie trzeba było uczcić... |
